In June Peter & Glenn of PBS made a donation of £1000 to Stepney Primary School to fund the year 4 pupils visit to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway this summer term. Pete, a former pupil of the school and Glenn visited the school to talk with the pupils about the local railway and its history.
In addition to this, we have also installed sculptures at Stepney Station on behalf of the school. Forming another iconic landmark to the City in the year of City of Culture, the sculptures, designed by the students, represent people who worked or used to travel on the railway. Paul Browning the School Headteacher said the following following completion of our work:
"On behalf of everyone at Stepney Primary School, I would like to express our most profound thanks to PBS for a service of the highest quality, both in terms of administrations/organisation and the execution of the work.
From the outset, when my wife and I first met Glenn at Stepney Station for a site visit, through to the completion of the project and grand unveiling, we have had a first-rate personal service from an extremely friendly, approachable and professional outfit.
Whatever we have asked to be done, it has been acted upon straight away and finished expertly. Indeed, our ideas of what might constitute a job well done have been eclipsed by the higher expectations of PBS staff.
When we asked the ground to be cleared and the former platform concreted, the result was almost as good as if we'd asked for an actual platform.
In addition to the work itself, the workmen undertaking it were all really approachable and friendly. They all appeared eager, enthusiastic and interested in our project. Quite a few remembered the station in its heyday and were happy to chat about it. It all added to the impression of an honest, hardworking team.
This is not surprising; given the interaction we have had with Peter and Glenn Smurthwaite, who have been wonderful, helpful and exceedingly generous, both in their own time and money. The new friends we have made as part of this project have really brought the history of the days of steam to life and we are indebted to them all for this.
It is clear that Peter and Glenn, aided by the obvious admin abilities of Aimee in the office, lead a highly-motivated and effective company. It is very much appreciated."
